About Matthew K Mayes

Sophistication is not just a knowing about the world and the applying of knowledge about the world, but also about the self.

Knowing myself as a musician means knowing my pain and darkness; my hungers and desires and my specific gifts.

In music composition, sophistication means being deliberate about design, or at least allowing for a bit of reflection and open minded and open hearted sensibility about the statement being made on all levels of human vibration.

In performance, sophistication means knowing myself and my environment as a performer and in the space I’m performing.

Everything matters.

This is why we build special rooms for performances.

Seeking sophistication means living beyond just survival but walking a path to a higher place where one might attain satisfaction on a deeper level. But, one must first know about the possibilities and how good things can be before one dares to reach for them.

Sophistication means playing with a wide dynamic range of expression on my instrument, from very very soft to more of an attack on the strings. This goes back to knowing the environment and having facility that unlocks these wider dimensions of expression.

Sophistication means to be playing with others who can support my needs as a musician.

I’m on a spiritual path and music is my medium.
