Why I Play Electric Violin

Electric violins are silent.

My ears are very sensitive. The acoustic violins are right next to my left ear and it frankly makes my ear drum muscles spasm. The Electric violin is very quiet and much more comfortable next to my ear. This allows me to practice without disturbing others as well, with headphones if I want.

Electric violins have lower action.

The electric violin gets its volume from the amp, not from string height and tension so you can lower it down further. My NS violin has an easy to raise and lower bridge.

Electric violins are dependable / durable.

The electric violin can get a little sun and rain on them with no issues or worry. They can be occasionally bumped and not go out of tune or get damaged. Temperature changes don’t hurt the performance of them as much.

Electric violins look cool.

Electric violins can make a personal statement about your style.

Electric violins don’t feedback on stage.

Sound checks are much quicker and easier with electric violins because there’s not going to be feedback problems because the bodies are less resonant to ambient sound. This can give the player a more consistent sound, as acoustic violins need a lot of EQ which changes by the room and sound system.

Electric violins stay in tune / easy to tune.

My NS violin is very easy to tune and easy to change strings. It stays in tune and is quick to bring up or down in pitch with the body mounted thumb tuners.

Electric violins are adjustable.

The ergonomics of an electric violin are usually adjustable to fit your body and playing posture.

Electric violins are portable.

The smaller size of some electric violins makes them very convenient to travel with.

Pure Sound.

The sound of an electric is often more direct and pure, with less peak frequencies, much like a solid body electric.
